A Brief 2022 Covid Paint Shortage Update

People have asked us a lot in the last two years about how COVID has impacted the painting world. Well, aside from the labor supply issues, which is a completely separate topic, paint shortages were the most unforeseen aspect. Without any reason that I can think of, it was the lower grade paints that disappeared the quickest. These are typically the most simple to produce, which to me, seems like it would position them as the easiest to keep going. As these products disappeared, painters were forced by the market to buy the next cheapest products. This buying then cleared out much of the contractor grade paints and resulted in a paint supply shortage of mid-level product that many painters, who compete on price along, tend to gravitate toward. At this point, current day, while the COVID era has much passed, paint supply issues continue. Many lower grade and mid-grade paints are still difficult to get. Premium products are also harder to come by. These products aren’t available at all the stores either like they used to be. Some stores have none, some have just a few, and ultimately there is a lot of run-around to get the products consolidated as needed by a premium paint company. The final shortage we’re seeing is on select sheens, and select unique products, where ingredients are missing that are vital for production. The impact takes form as product substitutions, which are typically less price advantageous so that durability is still achieved (I.E., more expensive product to get the same basic job done). All told, it’s a mess out there. However, a great interior painting company is set up to navigate these paint shortages and make sure solutions are found.
